The city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama was hit by a major tornado April 27, 2011. The Book Arts Department, a part of the School of Library and Information Studies, and the Alabama Center for the Book both housed in the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library on the campus of the University of Alabama did not receive any damage. The University of Alabama campus received only minor damage.
Everyone in the Book Arts Department and the Alabama Center for the Book have been accounted for. Some members of the University Libraries have not been located. Many colleagues in the book arts department and UA Libraries have had major damage to their homes, in some instances a total loss.
